Hands in Portrait Photography

How can something as simply as your hands enhance a portrait in photography? It is unbelievable by just using your hands how it can create a feeling by looking at the page. This YouTube video allows you to see how the hands help set the mood for the photograph and the different ways you can position your hands.

How do you photograph hands?

  • Keep the hands relaxed with the fingers separate.
  • Give them something to hold onto, or do (i.e. resting them on a chair).
  • Hands look better shot from the side.

This video focuses on posing hands that do not revolve around an individuals face.

Are you a photographer that is comfortable using the models hands in the photo? Do you have any other ideas to add onto using your hands in a photograph? What are your favourite hand poses?
