Supports Provided from Social Networks

Do you feel this way in the classroom? Have you ran into this experience before? What have you done to resolve it? Mind Shift presents the idea of using Social Networking amongst teachers in a school. It is an easy, simple way to share your ideas and inquire new ones for your classroom, or teaching styles.

Time is a major asset that is lacking in a teachers lifestyle, because of this they are unable to feel connected with other educators across the world. Many concerns can occur from disconnection; one being lack of inspiration.

It is explained that keeping connections with other educators through social media can help eliminate the feeling of loneliness.  Many of the social media websites have educational aspects involving them.

Facebook has many different pages that have informative information, as well as, Facebook allows you the ability to add your colleagues. The privacy issue is a concern when adding colleagues on different social media site, but if your Facebook page is strictly professional it allows you the ability to see what they are interested in, or sharing.

There are many educational opportunities revolving Twitter. Over the course of a week there are many Educational Twitter Chats that are associated with different topics, levels of status, roles and responsibilities. Many experiences, thoughts, opinions and ideas are shared through these chats. On Twitter you have the option to follow which topics you are interested in, want to learn more about, etc…

Pinterest gives an educator the ability to specifically search new strategies that they could implement into their lesson plans. Many different topics are talked about, or “pinned” on Pinterest. An educator has the ability to narrow searches directly specific to an idea, or thought that they want more information on, or to connect with.

Google+ has many different opportunities to provide teachers with connections. On Google+ a teacher could initiate a lesson, or present on a certain subject matter. There are also many different educators you are able to follow on Google+. They share websites that have been useful to them in the past, that may be effective, or helpful to a teacher in the future.

Many of these social networking sites do not have face to face interaction methods, but there are many ways to get new ideas. An educator has the ability to connect with other teachers online through any of these, plus more! A teacher should not feel as though they do not have any supports in a classroom, because it is only a CLICK away.

  1. Thanks for this post. You do discuss some important resources.

    What I would push you to do is go deeper into one specific resource. For instance, you talk about Twitter chats, but you may want to link and discuss key resources on how to do a Twitter chat. Or you may want to discuss relevant hashtags or how to use them. These are examples.

    So, do think about expanding your understanding and description of one of more of these tools. I want to make sure you get it, and also, it is great to be able to help others with this who are new to these tools.

    One other thought … I find your blog quite dark and a bit hard to read (white on black). Have you considered other themes at all? What I would do is ask friends or colleagues to read your blog and see if they would prefer other formats or colours. Maybe it’s just me … but feedback is not a bad thing to get from others.
